Jurgen Klopp unveiled: New Liverpool boss targets end to title drought

first_img Jurgen Klopp Jurgen Klopp outlined his ambition to end Liverpool’s 25-year title drought when he was unveiled as the club’s new manager on Friday. The charismatic German gave his first press conference at Anfield after signing a three-year contract – with the option of a further 12 months – to succeed Brendan Rodgers. He urged supporters to be patient as he looks to implement his philosophy at the club, but he admitted he will be disappointed if he doesn’t lead the club to title glory.“Twenty-five years ago (Liverpool’s last title) is a long time. In this time all people have tried to get better, to improve, to take the next title,” he said.“But history is only the base for us. It is all the people are interested in but you don’t take history in your backpack and carry it with you for 25 years.“We can wait for it but I don’t want to say we can wait 20 years.“If we sit here in four years I think we’ll have won one title – I’m pretty sure.”Klopp impressed the assembled media, showing humility and speaking elegantly in both English and German.Insisting he is no genius, the 48-year-old declared himself the ‘Normal One’ after he was asked how he would compare himself to Chelsea manager José Mourinho, who famously labelled himself as the ‘Special One’ in his first press conference in 2004.“I don’t want to describe myself. I’m a totally normal guy, I’m the Normal One,” he said.On whether he can become an Anfield great, he added: “I am a normal guy from the Black Forest. I don’t compare myself to these genius managers in the history of Liverpool. “It is not my part to think about this. Not one of these great managers said at their first press conference ‘I want to be a legend.’”Klopp is only the 20th manager in Liverpool’s illustrious history, and he declared his pride at taking on the job.“It’s the biggest honour I can imagine, one of the biggest clubs in the world,” said the 48-year-old. “I’ve been given the opportunity to help in this situation, but it’s not so difficult as some people in this room think.”Asked what Liverpool’s style of play would be under him, he responded: “Emotion inside, speed. Transition game. You will see this. All the things that make football interesting to me, I want to see on the pitch.“In this time, we have to win points. I said this word, full throttle football. It will be full throttle football.”Jurgen Klopp’s first press conference as Liverpool boss: Best quotes as new man makes impressive start 1last_img read more

Could Donegal’s next tourists be from outer space?

first_imgThe force of Star Wars is being felt all over the world, and further afield, before the new movie comes out next week. Donegal and Kerry were famously used as the setting for Star Wars: The Last Jedi – which has now inspired an extraordinary publicity stunt from Tourism Ireland. The tourism officials have launched an out-of-this-world campaign to visitors from afar. As far as space, no less! A billboard highlighting Earth’s Wild Atlantic Way was sent into space using a weather balloon. It reached a peak altitude of 33,390 metres, showcasing the Irish coastal route to potential visitors in far-flung planets perhaps! The aim of the stunt is to create some excitement just before The Last Jedi is released and to remind fans everywhere that locations in counties Cork, Kerry, Clare and Donegal will represent the planet Ahch-to in the film – due to hit the big screen on 15 December.Tourism Ireland will once again leverage the huge global popularity of Star Wars for Irish tourism. The organisation will launch the first phase of its new Star Warscampaign on 18 December, targeting fans of the science fiction franchise everywhere. “Our space tourism publicity stunt is a bit of fun, designed to create some excitement as Star Wars fans everywhere get ready for the release of The Last Jedi,” said Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland.“The fact that another Star Wars film was shot on location along the Wild Atlantic Way is truly a fantastic coup for Irish tourism. It presents Tourism Ireland with a superb opportunity to highlight the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland in 2018.” Could Donegal’s next tourists be from outer space? was last modified: December 8th, 2017 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Star WarsTourism IrelandWild Atlantic Waylast_img read more
