Lyon Capitale in receivership

first_img Organisation January 12, 2006 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Lyon Capitale in receivership FranceEurope – Central Asia Help by sharing this information May 10, 2021 Find out more Placed in receivership on 10 January by the city’s commercial court, Lyon Capitale has avoided liquidation for the present and is open to possible new ownership bids. In the meantime, the newspaper has still not reappeared for sale at newsstands.——9 January 2006Lyons-based weekly faces bankruptcy after criticising city’s mayorReporters Without Borders voiced regret today that the provincial weekly Lyon Capitale is facing bankruptcy as a result of its criticism of Lyons mayor Gérard Collomb in October over his allocation of public markets, which prompted the mayor to withdraw all municipal advertising from the newspaper.Run at a loss for years, Lyon Capitale has depended on municipal subsidies and advertising for its survival. Its financial problems deepened after it was bought by a group of private investors in August. A close aide of the mayor told Reporters Without Borders that Collomb terminated all advertising because he felt he had been libelled, but the decision is likely to result in the newspaper’s closure and the dismissal of all of its staff.“We regret that a newspaper’s survival is in danger because it criticised a local politician,” Reporters Without Borders said. “Lyon Capitale’s journalists are paying the price for the sharp deterioration in relations between the newspaper’s executives and the city of Lyons. Regardless of whether or not the accusations against mayor were true, the use of state and local government advertising as a means of pressure threatens press freedom and must be condemned.”Lyon Capitale used to support Collomb when he took over as mayor in 2001 but it gradually began giving more and more space to the local opposition, especially his leading challenger, Dominique Perben of the centre-right UMP. After the publication of the very critical issue in October, the mayor took Lyon Capitale’s majority shareholder, Bruno Rousset, to task about its editorial line. The newspaper’s publisher, Jean-Olivier Arfeuillère, was fired on 13 December.Rejecting the publisher appointed to replace Arfeuillère, the newspaper’s staff staged a series of strikes in December. The editor was dismissed as well on 3 January. The newspaper has not been published for several weeks and may never re-appear.Meanwhile, the staff of another Lyons-based newspaper, La Tribune de Lyon, also went on strike on 4 January in protest against the censorship of a report implicating the mayor in a case of embezzlement. The publisher, who is a Collomb supporter, refused to publish the article and replaced it with an interview with Collomb. Tajh Boyd Making Case for Heisman Trophy Leads Clemson

After Tajh Boyd threw five TDs in Clemson’s season-opening victory against Georgia, the quarterback made a statement that he’s a real contender for the Heisman Trophy this year. Now, the QB is proving his case for the trophy for best college football player at the end of the regular season.Boyd threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another as he lead the Clemson Tigers to a 56-7 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday. The outstanding performance made him only the second Atlantic Coast Conference quarterback to score 100 career TDs.“It was a fun game,” Boyd said. “I got a lot of chances to smile out there.”Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris told Boyd to just go out there and “Have fun.” Morris mentioned before the game that he thought Boyd was putting too much pressure on himself, and that the quarterback just needed to relax and play his game.“The biggest thing for me is just to go out and enjoy,” playing football, Boyd said. “I’ve pretty much accomplished everything you can accomplish in a college career, minus a couple of things. But, now I’ve got to enjoy this last go-round with my guys.”Boyd’s accomplishments against Wake Forest left him at 102 TDs in his college career. He joined former North Carolina State QB Phillip Rivers as the only two players in ACC’s history who managed to hit the 100th touchdown mark. Boyd also surpassed Charlie Whitehurst as Clemson’s total offense leader, by throwing for 311 yards and running for 69 yards. read more

Report Apple Could Release New iPod Models Tomorrow

first_img Remember the humble iPod? The other high-tech must-have that people used to line up outside Apple stores to buy, years before everyone fell for the iPhone? Well, hold your earbuds because rumor has it the Cupertino colossus’ first pocket digital jukebox could make a comeback as early as tomorrow. Operative part of that sentence = rumor. Maybe, just maybe, Apple might release a new, improved line of iPods mañana, that is if a recent report by iGen rings true. (We reached out to Apple to check if it is, but, predictably, we have yet to hear back.) The French website claims that the California company is poised to release new iPod touch, nano and shuffle models, perchance just in time for #TakeMeBackTuesday. The possible new models could even come in fun colors like fuchsia, gold and electric blue, along with the standard black, pink and grey. Also as part of the potential rollout, the iPod touch, Apple’s first touchscreen iPod, could arrive decked out with a faster processor, perhaps a 64-bit upgrade. It doesn’t look like its cousins, the shuffle and the mini, will come equipped with faster processors.    Related: How Dumb Is This Apple iPod Antitrust Suit? The last iPod touch refresh arrived in 2012. On top of a potentially speedier processor, the rumored new iPod touch could also feature camera improvements and additional storage space, according to Apple Insider. The speculation from iGen, which is quickly making the rounds and equally quickly devolving into a game of “Telephone,” appears to have been spawned by a somehow eyebrow-raising new snippet of code spotted in the latest iTunes 12.2 software.Of course, all of this gossip bears a grain of salt, as it doesn’t take much to spark rumors about any and all things Apple. Then again, Apple stepping up its dated music hardware would dovetail nicely with its new Apple Music offering. One might lead to more sales of the other.Related: Richard Branson’s Biggest Mistake: Inventing the iPod… as a PrankApple Music also raised a few eyebrows this week, and not in the best way at the Federal Trade Commission. Investigators from the government agency are digging into whether Apple’s treatment of rival streaming music apps, like Spotify, Jango and Rhapsody, violate U.S. antitrust laws. But let’s get back to the good, old iPod. Apple’s digital successor to the portable audio cassette music player first debuted in October 2001. Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs described his company’s inaugural iPod as “the 21st-century Walkman.” The all-white device, a Walkman killer indeed, rolled out with the brilliantly simple advertising tagline “Say Hello to iPod. 1,000 songs in your pocket.”Who knows? Perhaps tomorrow we’ll all say hello to an all-new iPod or a few. Or not. We’ll keep you posted.Related: 5 Things I Learned About Successful Startups From Steve Jobs Register Now » Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.
