Graduate student launches neon sign startup

first_imgCarissa Brones, who is pursuing a Master of Science in entrepreneurship, launched the company in July along with Warren Weiss, a Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising alumnus. (Emily Smith | Daily Trojan)Noticing the growing popularity of neon signs adorning the walls of local Los Angeles establishments, Carissa Brones, who is pursuing a Master of Science in entrepreneurship, and Warren Weiss, a Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising alumnus, founded startup Good Life Neon to contribute to the trend.Launched in July, the company designs and produces custom neon signs for its clients. To grow the brand, Brones and Weiss have been advertising to bars, restaurants and stores. Thus far, Good Life Neon has created two signs: one for a birthday party and one for Sugar Lemon Water spa. “We want to make the signs part of the design of the place and also something people think is really pretty and want to take pictures,” Brones said. “A lot of…destinations now have something that makes them attractive and you go not for the store but to take the picture. We’re really playing into that appeal.”Brones and Weiss met at an Equinox gym over a year ago, and have been close friends since. They were inspired to create neon signs when they saw how well they were selling at the store Weiss used to work at. After taking two entrepreneurship classes at USC Marshall School of Business during the last semester of senior year, Brones was convinced to start a business. According to Brones, launching a startup had already in the back of her mind as she knew the venture would encourage independence and creativity.Good Life Neon Company accepts commissions, creates sign designs and sends them to a third-party manufacturer. Brones and Weiss are hoping to work with businesses in Los Angeles and eventually branch out into multiple cities. Their current project includes developing a sign for a bar in Palm Springs. The business is also working on building an Instagram following and a stronger digital brand. In the future, Brones hopes to own a fitness center while Weiss aspires to start a clothing boutique. The Good Life Neon co-founders aspire to familiarize themselves with popular brands in their chosen fields by designing signs for them. “A lot of entrepreneurs that you’ll talk to, they’ll say … if you want to know what it’s like, start your own business and get out there and learn everything on your own,” Brones said. “And it’s true. In the real world, when you have to do things on your own …you’re out there and have to figure things out as they go.”While Brones and Weiss consider the company a side project for the time being, they are hoping it expands and appeals to the brands they look up to. Brones believes that leading this business will be a learning experience and a good career opportunity.last_img read more

AAF players ‘authorized’ to sign with NFL teams, suspended league announces

first_imgWith the AAF players allowed to sign with NFL teams, it appears as if it is only  a matter of time before the suspended league folds.Tuesday’s decision to suspend operations shocked AAF players and coaches alike, especially since there were just two weeks left in the season. Some of the teams decided to throw in the towel altogether and send coaches and players home (albeit reportedly without paying their way after opting not to keep housing them in hotels during the “indefinite” suspension). Now that AAF players and NFL personnel can be in contact, there might be some NFL teams willing to take a flyer on the best out of the AAF, at least in the form of meetings or workouts.Despite players being allowed to explore NFL options, some players are reporting that with the suspension of league operations, players are on the hook for paying for their current lodgings, amongst other charges that the league normally would take on. Adrien Robinson, a former Giants tight end who played for the Memphis Express, detailed how he now has a $2,500 charge for [email protected] I woke up to over a $2500 charge pending on my account from the Sonesta hotel our team stayed in. I called the bank and Memphis team president. My only option is to dispute the charges on Monday. The same thing happened to other players on our team @ohrnberger— Adrien Robinson (@ItsARob8One) April 4, 2019Memphis fullback Anthony Manzo-Lewis also posted to Twitter that the team had their personal items waiting in the lobby of their hotel after the league suspended operations and that he had no place to stay. The AAF was created with the hope of being a farm system to the NFL. AAF officials were trying to clear the way with the NFL Players Association to be able to borrow third- and fourth-string players from NFL rosters to give them playing time and experience, but there reportedly was pushback from the NFLPA about allowing that to happen. FanDuel names Orlando Apollos AAF champions, will pay futures bets AAF co-founder Bill Polian blasts Tom Dundon for shutting down operationscenter_img With the writing on the wall, the Alliance of American Football is allowing its players to sign with NFL teams, the upstart league announced Thursday. This counters previous reports that the AAF wasn’t allowing its players to talk to NFL teams at all by sending a memo to the NFL telling the organization not to contact AAF members. Some argue that the AAF players already were free to sign with NFL teams because when the AAF suspended operations it did so in breach of its contracts with the players, rendering them free agents immediately. Legal arguments aside, NFL teams now will be allowed to sift through names on the eight AAF rosters and determine if they want to contact players for potential meetings and workouts. While the AAF has suspended operations, it hasn’t officially folded or canceled its season, which is why the memo reportedly was sent out. Gallery Columbus Emerges from Repair

first_imgImage Courtesy: DamenDamen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, has completed maintenance and repair works on the newest member of Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ (CMV) fleet, the cruise ship Columbus. After the full scope of works was completed, the recently purchased vessel could sail to the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury, the UK, in time for its naming ceremony and inaugural cruise, Damen said.Columbus, previously known as Pacific Pearl, arrived at the Rotterdam yard on May 13 and departed on June 5. With the overall aim of bringing the vessel in line with CMV’s operational standards, Damen said it carried out a comprehensive scope of maintenance and repair jobs. “After docking, we started straight away with a complete painting programme. This included the application of the company logos and markings of the new owners,” Vincent van Rulo, DSR Project Manager, explained.Technical aspects included maintenance of the main engines, generators and thrusters as well as polishing of the ship’s propellers.According to Damen, the complexity of the project was heightened due to the fact that up to 700 crew members were staying on board while the ship was docked at the yard.Since it left Rotterdam, Columbus is sailing on its first cruise under the CMV flag.last_img read more
