County to pay $110,000 to family of dead Pitchess inmate

first_imgThe county will pay $110,000 to the family of an inmate who died in 1998 in his cell at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, under the terms of a settlement approved Monday. The money will go to Mary Gray, widow of inmate Julius Gray, and to the couple’s son. An autopsy showed Julius Gray died in November 1998 of a ruptured aneurysm. But a second post-mortum, financed by his family, found a slight fracture of the neck caused by blunt force trauma that preceded and caused the aneurysm, according to county documents. The county stood by its autopsy, but county counsel determined it would be prudent to settle out of court rather than risk a trial. If the Grays won, the county estimated its costs at $1.35 million. Gray had failed to attend court-ordered counseling, a warrant was issued, and he was arrested and sent to the maximum-security North County Correctional Facility at Pitchess. The family filed a wrongful death and during depositions, Gray’s niece, then 13, and nephew, 12, testified they had visited their uncle the day he died and saw a sheriff’s deputy hit and choke him. That information was never reported to the homicide investigators. Nevertheless, the Sheriff’s Department agreed with the recommendation to settle the case. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
