Giroud fighting for starting spot again

first_imgPARIS, France (AP):Despite helping France reach the European Championship final, striker Olivier Giroud finds himself once again fighting for his place in the national side. His position has come under serious threat from Kevin Gameiro, and coach Didier Deschamps must choose between them to play alongside Antoine Griezmann in today’s World Cup qualifier against Sweden.Gameiro appears to be the favourite to start, but Giroud’s physicality and heading ability could prove useful against a robust Sweden side level with France in Group A.”Olivier and Kevin have different styles. Olivier is more of a link player, Kevin is more about speed and making runs,” Deschamps said. “Both are very effective. I can use one at the start and one can come on during the match, depending on the opposition.”Giroud scored three goals at Euro 2016, forging a decent partnership with Griezmann, the competition’s top scorer with six, but he has lost his place in the Arsenal side to Chile striker Alexis Sanchez, while Gameiro is thriving at club level alongside Griezmann at Atletico Madrid.Although Giroud started France’s first match in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, he missed two clear chances in a 0-0 draw at Belarus.Gameiro replaced him in a 4-1 win at home against Bulgaria and a 1-0 win at the Netherlands. He scored twice against Bulgaria, with his second goal set up by Griezmann. Their partnership is progressing well at Atletico, where they have 13 goals between them this season. However, Giroud also has found some form recently for Arsenal. He came off the bench to score twice in quick succession in a 4-1 win at Sunderland and followed that up with a goal in the Champions League.last_img read more

18 KILLYBEGS BOATS BANNED FROM HERRING FISHERY BY MINISTER – MOONEY

first_imgSenator Paschal Mooney has called on the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney TD to allow the fishing fleet out of Killybegs to fish for herring in the Celtic Sea.The Leitrim Senator questioned Minister Coveney at a meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries today (Thursday, 19 July) about why his new policy excluded 18 out of 22 pelagic fishing boats in Donegal from the largest herring pelagic fishery in the Celtic Sea.Senator Mooney explained: “As a result of new criteria set down by Minister Coveney for herring fishing opportunities in the Celtic Sea, the Donegal fishing fleet has been denied access. “The criteria are based on providing access to those with a recent track record in herring fishing.  The quota wasn’t fished in ‘track record’ period by vessels the affected as the quota was too low.“This has had a serious impact on the local economy. As a result of the fleet being denied access to the Celtic Sea herring stock, 200 to 300 workers employed in fish processing facilities in South West Donegal will lose several weeks work as no herring is being processed.” 18 KILLYBEGS BOATS BANNED FROM HERRING FISHERY BY MINISTER – MOONEY was last modified: July 20th, 2012 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:18 KILLYBEGS BOATS BANNED FROM HERRING FISHERY BY MINISTER – MOONEYlast_img read more
