After knocking off Cornell, Syracuse defense focused on slowing VCU’s prolific offense to reach tournament’s third round

first_img Published on November 18, 2012 at 6:14 pm Contact Trevor: [email protected] | @TrevorHass Facebook Twitter Google+ Head coach Ian McIntyre knew his team would be in for a difficult challenge against Cornell’s explosive offense. On Tuesday afternoon, two days before the most significant game for Syracuse since 1984, McIntyre made sure his team was ready.Ted Cribley drilled a one-timer toward the goal off a pass from McIntyre, who stood cemented in the center of the box. The ball sailed over the bar. Mark Brode took a shot, but the ball flew just right of the goal. Though a few shots found the back of the net, SU goalkeeper Alex Bono stopped the vast majority, serving as a stone wall for Syracuse, as he’s done all season.Bono’s practice with that drill, along with other similar high-pressure drills, helped prepare him for Cornell’s dynamic offense. With tremendous help from the back four, Bono shut out the Big Red, leading the Orange to its first-ever win in the NCAA tournament. Now SU’s defense will square off against another explosive offense, as Syracuse (13-6) faces No. 14-seed Virginia Commonwealth (12-3-5) Sunday, with a spot in the third round of the NCAA tournament on the line.“We had to grind it out as always,” Cribley said after the win over Cornell. “We’ve been under pressure this season – similar games like that, where teams have put their big men forward and stuck it in the box. We’re accustomed to that. We train like that as well.”AdvertisementThis is placeholder textDespite Bono’s clean sheet, the goalie doesn’t hesitate to give the majority of the credit to his back four.“The back four was absolutely phenomenal,” Bono said. “I didn’t actually have much to do. Just a couple crosses for me here and there.”Cornell players swarmed into the box, frantically trying to salvage their 15-1 season and ensure it wouldn’t end in heartbreak.Yet, as each shot flew toward the net, communication and cohesiveness enabled the Orange to thwart each attack with poise.McIntyre praised his defense as well, saying that a collective effort led Syracuse to the win. He did single out two players in particular, though, players who have seen an increased role in the weeks since defender Skylar Thomas’ season-ending injury.“Chris Makowski was awesome tonight,” McIntyre said. “(Nick) Bibbs alongside. Since Skylar Thomas went down at Cincinnati those two have been rocks.”Those rocks, along with Jordan Murrell and Tyler Hilliard, have anchored a Syracuse defense that has posted 12 shutouts on the season, the most for the program since 1982.Now Syracuse will look to continue to ride that momentum against VCU and keep its postseason run alive. SU will be in for yet another difficult challenge, though, as the Rams’ offense is in the top 20 nationally scoring at two goals per game.Jason Johnson, VCU’s most lethal scorer, comes into the game tied for 11th nationally with 32 points. The Orange defense will look to shut down Johnson, as it did Cornell’s Daniel Haber, in order to help lead the team to another victory Sunday night.“We’ve got a solid back four,” Cribley said. “We’ve got some very good players back there.” Commentslast_img read more

Derek Carr should lead the Raiders into Las Vegas — and get more credit

first_imgDerek Carr exited his last-ever game in Oakland on Dec. 15 to boos from Raiders fans and uncertainty from upper management. He’d failed to lead a second-half scoring drive in a 20-16 loss to the Jaguars — further evidence for some that his performance level had dipped to an unacceptable level.Carr is signed for three more years at a $19.6 million average annual value, but it’s reportedly possible he will not be under center when the Raiders debut in Las Vegas in 2020. Coach Jon Gruden is said to have a “significant disconnect” with Carr, and an offseason trade does not seem far-fetched. There is reason to believe an offense featuring Carr in Las Vegas could be productive. The Raiders have the best rookie running back in the league in Josh Jacobs — an ideal complement to the passer and his unfinished receiving corps that includes a rapidly developing Hunter Renfrow. They also possess a strong line.So rather than fracture that respectable and still-growing attack, general manager Mike Mayock could instead address his team’s horrendous defense or culture of back-stabbing.But maybe that kind of complex improvement is beyond this franchise. Scapegoating the quarterback, after all, is its time-honored way to side-step genuine introspection. “I’m getting old now. I want to let it fly,” Gruden told reporters recently. “I want big plays. I want excitement. These bubble screens and checkdowns only go so far with me.”MORE: Mark Davis infuriates Oakland on his way outCarr deserves far more credit than he has received, though. Despite his flaws, and an uninspiring 7-9 record this year, he remains the Raiders’ best choice at quarterback. He is a risk-averse, sturdy passer on a team that was plagued by dysfunction at the position for an entire decade before drafting him.Carr’s numbers paint him as a league-average quarterback. He finished 2019 second in completion percentage, 11th in interception percentage and 21st in touchdown percentage. He carried the ninth-best passer rating. He was tied for seventh in number of game-winning drives led.As for the narrative that Carr is weak-minded, or ill-suited to handle rigors of professional football? It’s nonsense, and a toxic reminder of how players bound for crippling physical and mental disorders in retirement are unfairly judged.Carr broke his fibula in 2016. He’s often played through busted ankles and back problems. There is little evidence to suggest he doesn’t fit the gross, pedestaled model of “toughness” in the NFL.Here’s a quote from Carr from when he re-entered a game following a hit to the head and nasty ankle turn last season: “As soon as it happened, you grab it because it’s painful, and you try to stand up and it’s not good, but they ran it back, so I had to get ready as fast as I could. I told the trainer to hurry up and tape it so I could finish with my teammates.”Carr has also dealt with extensive organizational overhaul. He’s played for three head coaches and four offensive coordinators since 2014. He’s seen his best receiver, Amari Cooper, get traded to Dallas, and the team’s top defender, Khalil Mack, be dealt to Chicago. He endured the Antonio Brown clown show while trying to prepare for this season.last_img read more

Mavericks Barbers: What is the difference between beard oil and beard balm?

first_imgThis week, the male grooming experts at Mavericks Traditional Barbershop Letterkenny explain the answer to a common question – what is the difference between beard oil and beard balm? It’s a question we get asked a lot in Mavericks. It can be answered, but which one you should use is a decision bested suited to the man himself and simply which one he like the best. First of all what is the difference: Beard balms contain ingredients such as shea butter and beeswax which give them more substance and a solid form. However when you are applying it and rub it between the palms of your hands the heat and friction turns it into an oil.Since balms contain these ingredients they have an ability to tame a beard. This is useful if it is a long beard, in our opinion it is a negligible point for a short or stubble beard.Beard balms maybe a small bit more expensive. However, generally there is substantially more in the tin and it will last you a lot longer than a beard oil, therefore making it better value.Beard oil is easier to work into the root and the man’s face, which is essential in achieving the complete healthy beard and avoiding the dreaded beardruff. What is the same:All good quality balms and oils will contain some form of a natural oil such as jojoba, argan, sweet almond, grapeseed. These all have terrific hydrating/moisturizing abilities for your skin and hair follicles and it will be the main ingredient. Regardless if you use balm or oil, you must apply it daily for optimum results. You actually use very little, but it must be regular.Short Beard – For shorter beards it may be better to go for beard oil.Long Beard – If you have longer facial hair anything over 4cm it may become necessary to tame the beast a bit. The fullness and malleability of the beard is greatly improved with beard balm. Shine – If you prefer your beard to feel light and look shiny, beard oil is the ideal option for you.Beard balm works best if you pair it with a great beard brush. This will help you shape the beard up even better and help you tame unruly hairs in your beard. Can I use both of them?I certainly didn’t tell you to choose between beard oil and beard balm. The fact that these two products have their differences and similarities, this doesn’t stop you from using both of them. You can easily include both in your beard care routine. Even at the same time. The Mavericks, the ones that have decent beards (you know who I’m talking about… No, not Ronan or Noel) often apply Prorasso beard oil and comb it right into the roots, then tame and hold the shape of the beard with a touch of Capt. Fawcett’s beard balm for the ultimate treatment and look. With over 20 different beard balms, oils and soaps, Mavericks has one of the best ranges of beard products in the country.
