Jurgen Klopp unveiled: New Liverpool boss targets end to title drought

first_img Jurgen Klopp Jurgen Klopp outlined his ambition to end Liverpool’s 25-year title drought when he was unveiled as the club’s new manager on Friday. The charismatic German gave his first press conference at Anfield after signing a three-year contract – with the option of a further 12 months – to succeed Brendan Rodgers. He urged supporters to be patient as he looks to implement his philosophy at the club, but he admitted he will be disappointed if he doesn’t lead the club to title glory.“Twenty-five years ago (Liverpool’s last title) is a long time. In this time all people have tried to get better, to improve, to take the next title,” he said.“But history is only the base for us. It is all the people are interested in but you don’t take history in your backpack and carry it with you for 25 years.“We can wait for it but I don’t want to say we can wait 20 years.“If we sit here in four years I think we’ll have won one title – I’m pretty sure.”Klopp impressed the assembled media, showing humility and speaking elegantly in both English and German.Insisting he is no genius, the 48-year-old declared himself the ‘Normal One’ after he was asked how he would compare himself to Chelsea manager José Mourinho, who famously labelled himself as the ‘Special One’ in his first press conference in 2004.“I don’t want to describe myself. I’m a totally normal guy, I’m the Normal One,” he said.On whether he can become an Anfield great, he added: “I am a normal guy from the Black Forest. I don’t compare myself to these genius managers in the history of Liverpool. “It is not my part to think about this. Not one of these great managers said at their first press conference ‘I want to be a legend.’”Klopp is only the 20th manager in Liverpool’s illustrious history, and he declared his pride at taking on the job.“It’s the biggest honour I can imagine, one of the biggest clubs in the world,” said the 48-year-old. “I’ve been given the opportunity to help in this situation, but it’s not so difficult as some people in this room think.”Asked what Liverpool’s style of play would be under him, he responded: “Emotion inside, speed. Transition game. You will see this. All the things that make football interesting to me, I want to see on the pitch.“In this time, we have to win points. I said this word, full throttle football. It will be full throttle football.”Jurgen Klopp’s first press conference as Liverpool boss: Best quotes as new man makes impressive start 1last_img read more
