Paul pledges to grab his CPL opportunity with both hands

first_imgPRIOR to the start of the inaugural Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in 2013, former West Indies captain and batting legend Sir Vivian Richards believed the League would provide young cricketers an opportunity to display and hone their skills in a competitive environment.Richards had also said the tournament should give the young players an opportunity to assess their professional career. And over the years the tournament has definitely proved to be the gateway for a numbers of young professionals, not only in the Caribbean, but also in most cricket playing nations. This year’s fifth edition will commence on August 4, and, as usual will be no different, with a number of young players having the opportunity to further enhance their cricketing career. One such player will be the talented Guyanese all-rounder, Keemo Paul. The former West Indies Under-19 player has been selected as a replacement for Shimron Hetmyer ahead of this year’s CPL tournament, according to the management of the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) on Wednesday.Hetmyer, who was initially selected by the Guyana Amazon Warriors as the West Indies Youth Player will be on West Indies Senior Team duties hence Paul has been chosen as his replacement.Speaking with Chronicle Sport yesterday, the 19-year-old said he is eager to grab the opportunity with both hands, adding that his main aim is to learn as much as possible.“Definitely I am overwhelmed, but at the same time humble at the opportunity given,” the first-class player pointed out.He added, “I’m looking forward to the opportunity since it will definitely be a challenge, but having said that, I just want to make it count”.Sir Vivian RichardsPaul was a part of previous training camps with the Warriors, but this time around he is eager to learn as much from the international players.“I was a part of previous training camp, but this time I will be more with the squad, so I want to learn as much as possible, especially from the international players,” he said.Paul who was Hetmyer’s deputy when the West Indies Under-19 team won the Youth World Cup in 2016, made his List A debut in January 2015 playing for the West Indies Under-19s in Tobago. In March this year, the 19-year-old right-handed all-rounder’s First Class debut was overshadowed by injury at the Queen’s Park Oval but came back with a tournament-winning six-wicket haul at Providence for the Guyana Jaguars.Meanwhile, the Warriors’ first step to winning their maiden CPL title will begin on July 26 when the official training camp gets underway. The South American-based franchise have been one of the most consistent sides since the tournament’s inception, reaching the finals in 2013, 2014 and 2016. In 2015, the Guyana Amazon Warriors reached the semifinals phase. The Guyana leg of the tournament will see the Warriors clash with the defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs on August 17, followed by Trinbago Knight Riders on the 19th.The three-time runners-up Warriors will then oppose Barbados Tridents the following day, after which they will play St Lucia Stars on the 22nd.last_img read more

Alakwe Back to Form, Aims for Continental Glory with FC IfeanyiUbah

first_imgNPFL…NPFL…NPFL…FC Ifeanyiubah returned to winning ways in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Sunday with returnee striker, Chijioke Alakwe, playing a prominent role in their assured display against Katsina United. After a 2-0 win over ABS in Nnewi on Match Day 23, the Anambra Warriors suffered a momentary dip-in-form as they secured only one point from their subsequent three league games, a disappointing draw at home to Wikki Tourists. Not only did the Anambra Warriors find victory elusive in those games, they also found goalscoring hard to come by as they only recorded a penalty goal – Prince Aggreh’s at Rivers United – to show for in those three games. With their minimum target of a continental finish gradually slipping off as a consequence, Coach Yaw Preko turned to the hitherto unwanted Alakwe on Sunday and the effervescent striker repaid his faith with a stellar performance, having a hand in both of his team’s goals – a goal and a winning a penalty -.“It’s a very good feeling. Coming back again and scoring in my first start, feels so great,” the Imo-born striker told www.npfl.ng after Sunday’s win.Alakwe had fallen down the pecking order in the first half of the season, failing to make an appearance for the team. More established stars such as last season’s league top scorer Godwin Obaje, Pascal Seka and Ifeanyi Onuigbo have been favoured over him.Alakwe who scored twice in nine appearances for the club last term has however made four appearances in this second stanza, including Sunday’s start much to a special kind of admiration from the home fans.“Yea, it’s always like that when i played last season (the love from fans.”“I was their favourite and they were so happy to have me back because it’s been long they saw me play and were asking questions why I was not playing,” he said. Now that he is back to reckoning, he hopes to take his opportunity well.“I’m 100 per cent up for the competition for places. I have waited for so long and now that I’m back and I’m gonna take every approach to see I stay in it.”Sunday’s win lifted FC Ifeanyiubah to just one spot into 6th but Alakwe is optimistic that with his side facing a trip to relegation-haunted Remo Stars this weekend, they can surge higher.“We are working hard right now and we are going for a win at Sagamu. It is a winnable game and we want to move higher on the league table so we can achieve our season’s aim,” he concluded. Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Exclusive – West Ham want to keep Morrison despite Allardyce’s desire to sell midfielder

first_imgDavid Sullivan has extraordinarily revealed to talkSPORT that the West Ham board are at odds with manager Sam Allardyce over the future of Ravel Morrison. The Hammers boss has publicly made it known he is open to selling the English midfielder despite the club’s desire to keep the 21-year-old.But the east London club’s co-owner, Sullivan, told the Sports Bar: “Sam has said Ravel is not part of his plans but we do – as a board – see him as part of our plans.“I think I he said in a press conference, if I read it correctly, he’s not part of his plans for this season. I think he said that in New Zealand but we don’t agree with that. We would like to sit down and give him a longer contract.”However, tellingly the Hammers chief confessed they may be forced into getting rid of the Manchester United youth product if Allardyce will not use him.“We do like him, we do see him as part of the long-term future of the club but we have to agree it with the manager because there’s no point signing a player he’s not going to play.”Another Hammers star whose future is in doubt is defender Winston Reid, who is understood to have rejected terms on a new contract. But Sullivan added: “I think we will get to a deal with Winston… So both balls are in the air with regards to Winston and Ravel but both are players we like very, very much.”last_img read more
