Root, Stoneman & Malan make fifties in warm-up

first_imgSKIPPER Joe Root scored his maiden fifty of the Ashes tour as England closed the opening day of their four-day warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI on 278-8.Opener Mark Stoneman (61) and Dawid Malan (63) also made half-centuries but no batsman was able to post England’s first century of the tour.Young leg-spinner Daniel Fallins, in his maiden first-class match, removed four of England’s top six in the day-night match, which is being played with a pink ball in Adelaide.Playing in conditions similar to those they will encounter in the floodlit second Ashes Test also in Adelaide, England fought hard but struggled to time the ball on a ground with a slow outfield.Root was the most fluent of England’s batsmen, making a busy 58 from 89 balls, but there were failures for opener Alastair Cook (15) and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow (9).‘WE WERE SLOPPY’While Surrey left-hander Stoneman looked impressive in reaching a second half-century in as many matches, he was disappointed to be caught at mid-wicket off a Fallins full toss.Speaking at the close, he said: “Some of the dismissals we had today were a touch on the sloppy side, so it was a little bit frustrating more than anything that we didn’t kick on and probably have a couple of hundreds scored out there today.“Everyone got a bit of time in the middle, so that was encouraging – but we also need to be scoring hundreds, and big hundreds.“So there are lessons to be learned from today.”England lost three wickets for seven runs in the last four overs under the lights to change a day that was looking satisfactory.Dawid Malan was out in the last over of the day but he has probably now done enough to cement his place at number five for the first Test at the Gabba on November 23.Alastair Cook’s lean start continued and while James Vince played some nice shots in his 33, his disappointing dismissal (bowled by Fallins) will worry those still to be convinced he can play a major innings at this level. Uitvlugt Estate surpasses first-crop target

first_imgAfter recently slumping to its lowest level in over two decades, the sugar industry is seemingly encountering a turnaround albeit at the Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara Estate which surpassed its target for the first crop.According to a release on Thursday, the Estate produced a total of 7011 tonnes, beating the 6671 tonnes target. The first crop tonnage was garnered from crushing some 84,295 tonnes of sugarcane. According to Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), private sugarcane farmers produced about 42 per cent (35,176 tonnes) of the crushed sugarcane.0Head of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited’s Special Purpose Unit (SPU) Colvin Heath-London expressed that “the performance of the Uitvlugt Estate is very encouraging, especially at this time when the SPU is securing funding for the operations of GuySuCo. The funding has been predicated on improved production performance from GuySuCo’s three estates.”Acting GuySuCo Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Paul Bhim was quoted as saying that the Estate’s performance was the “first validation of the new strategy to downsize the company and focus its best talent on making the estates more efficient and ultimately profitable”. He added that “given the developments at the other two GuySuCo Estates, Albion and Blairmont, we expect the same improved performance to become a trend.”The downsizing that Bhim mentioned referred to the thousands of jobs that workers lost when their employment was severed. To date, many of these workers are still awaiting half or all of their severance pay as in the case of some Wales Sugar Estate workers. Many of those former employees opted against travelling to Uitvulgt to retain their jobs because it was beyond 10 miles from their original place of work.Nevertheless, the joint SPU and GuySuCo statement noted that the Uitvlugt Estate was so far leading the way for the crop by achieving four Weekly Production Targets.“In keeping with GuySuCo’s agreements, employees were rewarded with four days’ pay as incentive for their hard work, commitment and outstanding achievements during the crop,” the statement added. It was pointed out that Uitvlugt surpassed the production target after grinding for seven weeks despite “severe mechanical and processing challenges” affecting efficiency at the onset of the crop. It was further disclosed that the Factory Engineering Services Unit worked in collaboration with the Uitvlugt Factory team to ensure that those defects were quickly corrected.“Surpassing the production target is a significant achievement for the Uitvlugt Estate, and a testimony of the team work and leadership at the Estate. In addition to leadership, the rehabilitation of the cultivation, which was started two years ago, and revised harvesting procedures in the crop assisted immensely in the Estate achieving its target,” the State bodies observed. At the end of 2016, sugar production dropped to 183,652 tonnes after 231,000 tonnes was produced in 2015. For 2017, Government had forecasted sugar production in its budget at 208,000 tonnes, but only 137,307 tonnes was recorded.last_img read more

Clark County outpaces Multnomah County for new residents

first_imgAs a suburb, Clark County is typically inferior to that big city across the Columbia River — at least numerically. We’ve got fewer people, fewer jobs, fewer vegan restaurants, fewer lines in front of those restaurants and no claim to fame for our naked bike rides or monstrous bookstores. But last year, Clark County gained more people than Multnomah County, Ore.Clark County grew by 9,095 people in 2017, an increase of 1.95 percent, according to newly released estimates from the U.S. Census. Multnomah County, Portland’s home county, gained 6,016 people. Most of the growth comes from people moving to the metro area rather than natural increase (births outnumbering deaths).“That’s actually not surprising,” said Nick Chun, manager of the Oregon Forecast Program at Portland State University’s Population Research Center. “All the projections have Clark County growing the fastest out of the seven counties.”Since 2014, he said, Clark County has captured between a fifth and a fourth of the Portland area’s net in-migration. Many of our newcomers are families with children. He said Clark County is expected to continue growing at a healthy clip. While there are different narratives people use for why that is happening, Chun said it’s partly due to people living in Vancouver and commuting to Portland. He expects Clark County to “capture a stable, if not increasing share,” of the metropolitan statistical area’s population.last_img read more
