Alcona does not become a 2nd amendment sanctuary county

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterShare to MoreAddThisALCONA, Mich. — Gun rights supporters crowded the Alcona County courthouse this morning, hoping to see their county declared a 2nd amendment sanctuary. While there is no legality behind this title, it does show that the county supports gun rights for their citizens.Last week 2nd amendment supporters gathered at Alpena’s annex building to do the same thing, however that decision was tabled until later this month. At Alcona’s commission meeting Wednesday morning, supporters voiced reasons why they support this resolution. Chair of Alcona County Republicans, Carrie Mullins said, “It’s not just about hunting. It’s about protecting one’s self, protecting others, and it’s a god–given right. Up here, that’s one of the things we do focus on. Don’t take our guns.” Over a dozen attendees spoke up during the public comment portion of the meeting, and most of them were concerned about current attempts to change gun laws, especially in Virginia. The board of commissioners voted unanimously to approve the resolution, but before they did, there was a significant amendment added. The word sanctuary had been removed. However, the county’s support of the 2nd amendment was made clear. Because the resolution carries no legal changes, chairman of the board, Craig Johnston agreed that this resolution is more of a statement from the commissioners and Alcona’s citizens. “Well I think the statement is that, as the board of commissioners, we will not tolerate infringements on 2nd amendment rights,” he said. “We’ll be very on guard for that happening. I’m sure this group of people will make sure we’re on guard. If anything comes along we will hear from them.”David Adams is a volunteer with Michigan for 2A Counties and he was the one to present the resolution. He said that, overall, he’s satisfied with the outcome. “Here in Alcona County I believe we’re in good shape. The amended resolution will be sent to Lansing and so forth, and I think that was the main purpose to get the word out that we’re not moving on this issue.”While the board of commissioners voiced their support for 2nd amendment rights in their county, it was decided that Alcona will not become a 2nd amendment sanctuary. AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterShare to MoreAddThis Tags: Alcona County, Alcona County RepublicansContinue ReadingPrevious Huron Pines making the most of the Emily Min Hunt Nature PreserveNext State of Michigan offers resources about auto insurance laws ahead of July 1 changeslast_img read more
