Being a vet no help in getting assistance

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion I’m writing this letter in response to some of the ungratefulness of the state of New York and the federal government. I have lost my food stamps and am finding it very hard to get some assistance for my rent. I’m ashamed to admit that I’m a veteran of this country when all I have come to expect from these organizations is little to no help.I’m told I make too much money. It may look that way on paper. I’m not getting what it states I’m getting from Social Security. The last two 2-percent cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) went to Medicare; I did not receive those COLAs. I’m still trying to live on the same net income I have been living for the past four years. I have no idea why everybody asks for gross income when you don’t have that to live on. I think it’s just a way for you to be denied the help you are seeking.I’m thinking at this point in time of packing up some of my belongings and giving up my citizenship and moving to Canada, where at least I’m sure they treat their citizens with a lot less callousness than this country and state does.I would like to say thanks to our government, country, state and local — for nothing. What gets me, too, is that if I just come to this country without working one day here, without paying taxes here and never serving, I would be given the maximum that could be given. Sorry to be a natural citizen and veteran of this country.Peter ManningRotterdamMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?EDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusCar hits garage in Rotterdam Sunday morning; Garage, car burnlast_img read more

Tennis ace makes Aussie debut

The South African was unable to rattle Van Koot but she fought bravely in the second set, going down 1-6 and 5-7 in the end.Despite her defeat, Montjane’s appearance in the singles tournament was hailed as an honour, as normally only the top eight in the world are invited. She still has a chance of glory in the doubles when she takes on the top-seeded pair of Jiske Griffioen and Van Koot with her partner Daniela Di Toro from Australia. The match takes place on 24 January and is the last event on court five for the day.According to Wheelchair Tennis South Africa, one of Montjane’s big goals for 2013 is to become the first African wheelchair tennis player to be ranked in the top four in the world.Unbeaten by any other South AfricanConsidered a role model for able-bodied and disabled South Africans alike, Montjane has been South Africa’s top-ranked women’s open single player since 2005 and is also the top-ranked women’s doubles player. What impresses is that she only started her tennis career at the age of 20. Since then, however, she’s remained unbeaten by any other South African player. Her indomitable spirit was evident from childhood when, with an amputated foot and a congenital deformity of both hands and the other foot, she won awards for ballroom dancing. She holds 29 singles titles and has participated in the 2012 and 2009 Paralympics as well as the 2009 and 2011 World Team Cup – the wheelchair equivalent of the Davis Cup and the Federations Cup.In 2011 Montjane was South Africa’s disabled sportswoman of the year and she was one of the nominees for the award in 2012. In October 2012 Montjane was one of five nominees for the International Paralympic Committee’s player of the month award. But it’s not all sport for the champion – she also holds a BSc in recreation and leisure studies and at the moment is completing a diploma in retail business management at the University of Johannesburg.last_img read more

2017 tax outlook: The truth is in the detail

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest With all the changes in Washington, we at OSU Extension have gotten a lot of questions on what may be in store for tax reform in 2017? Most of the experts are saying we will see the most comprehensive tax reform since the tax reforms of 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. Some of these proposed tax changes could happen while others will just be fodder for talk shows and columns like this one. Given the shift of control to the Republican side of the aisle, it is wise to look at the “A Better Way” report released by Speaker Paul Ryan last summer for some potential tax reforms. For those who want more insight, the complete report can be found at: http://abetterway.speaker.gov/_assets/pdf/ABetterWay-Tax-PolicyPaper.pdf.So let’s peek into the crystal ball. Estate taxAt the beginning of January, House Resolution 198 titled the “Death Tax Repeal Act of 2017” was introduced into Congress and it currently sits in the Ways & Means Committee (https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/198). This bill is seeking to eliminate the federal estate tax. This is one area where I caution us to be careful of what you wish for. On the outside this may look like a good move but in the long run it could mean higher taxes for farmers and small businesses.Currently, Americans can pass on $5,490,000 to their heir(s) tax free when they die. The federal estate tax law also includes portability to a spouse, which essentially means as a couple we can pass on a combined $10.98 million tax free to our heirs. Even better, Ohio, led by Governor Kasich, repealed the Ohio Estate tax in 2013. So, if your estate is less than $5.49 million as an individual or $10.98 million as a married couple you should have very little concern in this area. And given that less than 0.2% of all estates are subject to federal estate tax each year, should this really be on the chopping block? So what am I concerned about? The introduced bill has very little in the way of detail. And the detail will be important. One item that could disappear if the estate tax is eliminated is the ability for heirs to “step-up” the value of the inherited assets to its current market value at death. This could be a significant loss to most farming operations.Again, the details in the Repeal Act will be important. It has been suggested a complete repeal of the estate tax could pave way for a capital gains tax collection at death. So imagine your heirs having to pay a 20% capital gain tax on the assets from your estate when you die. For a $2.5 million dollar farm in Ohio, this would mean $500,000 in taxes versus $0 under our current system. Ouch! Be careful what you wish for as the truth will be in the details. We need to know what a repeal of the federal estate tax actually means. Complete expensing of equipment and buildingsThe Administration is also advocating for businesses to be able to completely write-off the expense of any building or equipment in the year of its purchase instead of recovering its value through a depreciation schedule. This too could have some unattended consequences. Again, the truth will be in the detail.I think it matters very little on how we recapture the cost of these purchases. We have used Accelerated Bonus Depreciation and Section 179 for 15 years to recapture the cost of capital purchases quicker. My main concern is that complete expensing could cause a Net Operating Loss. This could lead to the farm family not paying anything into Social Security and Medicare or at such a low level that it would affect their retirement years. So while it may look good in the short term, without changes to how we pay into Social Security, it could lead to farmers not having enough eligible quarters to retire or be covered under Medicare. Again, be careful for what you wish for. Border Adjustment Tax (BAT)There has been a lot of chatter on the potential impact of implementing a border adjustment tax or BAT. This tax would be a huge change in the way we do business as Americans. Currently, products shipped overseas bear the cost of income tax where imported products don’t. In short, it could be considered a tariff without being called such. It would be a huge revenue source for the government and would promote domestic production. It is similar to the Value Added Tax used by many of our trading partners. The BAT along coupled with the proposed reductions in the tax rates for businesses should be a major catalyst for businesses here in the United States. So, how will the BAT impact agriculture? More specifically, how will it affect our trade relations especially with the top three international buyers of agricultural exports — Canada, China, and Mexico? I think most sectors of the economy will be weighing in on the BAT issue. Many retailers are very opposed to a border tax as a large percentage of the products they sell are imported. For agriculture, it is anticipated it would add 10% to 15% to some of the costs of our inputs such as diesel fuel and to other inputs such as fertilizer and equipment. The BAT debate is going to be fascinating to watch. Make sure to keep asking your legislators how it will impact agriculture. My recommendation is not to fall asleep on policy and tax reform in 2017. Be engaged, ask questions and ask how it will impact your operation and our entire industry in the short term as well as long term.last_img read more

Gmail’s New API: Email as Enterprise Platform

first_imgTags:#enterprise#news#NYT#Products 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now marshall kirkpatrick Related Posts Google has announced the availability of a new Application Programming Interface (API) that allows 3rd party services to offer contextually relevant content and functionality inside the email interface of Google Apps Gmail users. It’s just the latest sign that the email sector is heating up again. If you’ve noticed the way that certain Google properties like YouTube and Picassa have been treated differently when linked-to inside an email viewed in Gmail (both have resulted in video or image previews for the past few months) then you’ve got some idea how other applications can now relate to the contents of your mail. Now imagine other parts of an email being built on top of by a developer ecosystem. The potential here is very exciting.Email remains a rich and important platform for communication, now Google hopes it will become a platform for development too. The API will for now be limited to Gmail for Google Apps, where it can be deployed to entire groups by an Apps customer via the Google Apps Marketplace. A related move in the consumer version of Gmail came this Spring, when the company launched OAuth for IMAP. Earlier this morning the company announced the availability of new automating scripts for Google Apps as well.Ten services have been selected as launch partners and offer all the more indication of the possibilities. In Google’s words:Several new contextual gadget integrations for Gmail are available to Google Apps customers in the Apps Marketplace today:AwayFind lets you mark certain contacts or message topics as ‘Urgent’ and then alerts you via phone, SMS or IM when relevant messages arrive.Kwaga displays social network profiles and lists recent email exchanges with people you correspond with.Gist brings together information from across the web about people you’re corresponding with, providing rich person and company profiles, news and updates.Pixetell detects email links to video messages created with Pixetell’s video software and lets you preview, comment on, and share those videos without leaving your inbox.Smartsheet lets you access and update entries in Smartsheet’s sales pipeline and project management tool.Xobni, Rapportive, Manymoon, Newmind Group, and BillFLO have also launched their own contextual gadget integrations.Email is HotEmail may be tried and true, but it’s also a hot area for development these days. Good old Hotmail topped the news yesterday with a new version, for example. Over at Yahoo! there have been Mail APIs for years, though they’ve primarily been used internally to add new social features to Yahoo! Mail. That may change soon as well, however, as Yahoo’s Eran Hammer-Lahav, celebrated community leader in developing the OAuth mashup protocol, has recently shifted his focus to doing open standards development under the Yahoo! Mail department. Access restrictions to the Yahoo! Mail API were just lifted last month.Disclosure: Microsoft, the owner of Hotmail, is a sponsor of ReadWriteEnterprise.center_img Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo…last_img read more

We didn’t start well. City were the better team first half but we still created chances and were unlucky. Second half we played better and created more chances and scored. We were unlucky with other chances not going in. One moment we didn’t defend well and they scored.”We are two teams trying to force the other team to make a mistake. Both teams lost the ball. It was a game in which everything could happen. In the end we lost and are disappointed. But we also need to keep our confidence.”I don’t want to say it is a hammer blow. You are always disappointed to lose a game, especially when you come back and create chances. We will be happy if we had a draw. I thought we let ourselves down against Sheffield United. We should have beaten them but didn’t perform at our highest level.“We played a high-performance and energetic game against Aston Villa and won.“I thought we put in a good performance against Manchester City and them and Liverpool are the two best teams in the league.“I didn’t think anyone played well against Leicester and we all knew it. It’s in the back of everyone’s mind that it was a bad performance and we want to make it right against Everton.“They have made a few new signings and have a good team. Moise Kean and Alex Iwobi are two good acquisitions and Richarlison is playing well and scoring goals.“Every time we play Everton, it’s a good game to watch. We’re both attacking and both box to box which is probably why they have put it on television on Sunday.“We haven’t performed how we should have in the first four games and maybe the international break came at a good time because we can regroup and focus on Sunday because we need three points.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more
